Meet Scratch: The Visual Programming Interface

Build fluency with the Scratch environment — the doorway to all programming this year — before any real logic.

  1. What Programming IsBy the end you can say what a program is, name the two broad kinds of programming language, and get Robo to a flag using nothing but move blocks.
  2. Stage, Sprite, Palette, ScriptBy the end you can name the four parts of the screen and say what each is for, find a block by the colour of the palette it lives in, and tell — before pressing Run — which blocks will actually run and which will be ignored.
  3. A Keyboard-Controlled Walking AnimationBy the end you can explain what makes a key-press hat different from when clicked, predict where repeated presses leave a sprite, and build a program where all four arrow keys move a sprite in the direction pressed.
  4. Unit ChallengeBy the end you will have shown you can get Robo to a flag exactly, tell which blocks in a workspace will run, rebuild the walking animation from nothing, and say back what a program, an interface and a hat block are.
