GM12
Plane Shapes
Identify, name, and describe common plane shapes — triangles (by side and by angle), the special quadrilaterals, and circles — including their sides, angles, and lines of symmetry.
Builds on: PGM1
Recognise a plane shape and its sides and vertices, use the closed-and-straight-sided test to spot a polygon, name polygons from triangle to decagon, and tell regular from irregular.
Classify a triangle by its sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and by its angles (acute, right, obtuse), use equal sides facing equal angles to find a missing base angle, and give a triangle both names at once.
Name the six special quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezium, kite) and describe each by its sides, angles and parallel pairs, then identify a quadrilateral from property clues.
Identify and name the lines of a circle (centre, radius, diameter, chord, circumference) and its regions (arc, sector, segment, semicircle), and use diameter = 2 x radius to find one from the other.
Explain a line of symmetry as a fold/mirror line, then count the lines of symmetry of triangles, the special quadrilaterals, the circle, and capital letters, and compare shapes by how many they have.
