All 8 lessons in Introduction to Fractions

Builds on: PPV3

  1. 1. Naming Unit Fractions

Cut a whole into equal parts and name one part as a unit fraction (1/b): the denominator counts the equal parts and the numerator counts how many are taken.

  2. 2. Comparing Unit Fractions

Compare and order unit fractions by counting equal parts: cutting the same whole into more equal parts always makes each part smaller, so a smaller denominator means a bigger unit fraction.

  3. 3. Naming Non-Unit Fractions

Name fractions where more than 1 equal part is taken, using the numerator to count the parts and the denominator to count the total, and tell unit fractions apart from non-unit fractions.

  4. 4. Fractions of a Set

Name a fraction when the whole is a group of objects, and find how many objects make a given fraction of the group by splitting it into equal groups.

  5. 5. Fractions on the Number Line

Treat a number line from 0 to 1 as a whole, partition it into equal parts, and name fractions by counting hops from 0, including fractions that land exactly on a whole number.

  6. 6. Equivalent Fractions

Find equivalent fractions by re-cutting a fraction's parts into smaller, equal parts, using bars and number lines to show the same amount has a new name.

  7. 7. Comparing Fractions

Compare any two fractions by matching denominators, matching numerators, or using 1/2 as a landmark, and choose the right rule for a given pair.

  8. 8. Fractions Review

Bring together every skill from the unit: naming, comparing, fractions of a set, the number line, and equivalent fractions, including a multi-part exam-style problem.
