Multiplication Concepts & Facts
Understand multiplication as equal groups and build fact fluency to 12 × 12.
Builds on: PAS3
Recognise and make equal groups, add them, and write them with the times sign: 4 × 3 means 4 groups of 3. Groups of 1 and groups of 0.
Build and read arrays as equal rows, turn an array to find the turn-around fact, and name the product.
Count in 2s, 5s and 10s as equal jumps, spot multiples from the ones digit, and find 5 times a number as half of 10 times it.
Find new facts from known 2s, 5s and 10s facts: add one more group, take one group away, or split an array. Compare products without working them out.
Find the 4 times table by doubling the 2s and the 8 times table by doubling the 4s.
Find the 3 times table by adding one more group to the 2s, then find the 6 times table by doubling the 3s or by adding one more group to the 5s.
Find the 9 times table by taking one group away from the 10s, and the 11 times table by adding one group to the 10s.
Find the 7 times table by splitting 7 into 5 and 2, and the 12 times table by splitting 12 into 10 and 2 or by doubling the 6s.
Read every times fact from the multiplication square, use its mirror line, spot the square numbers and find a missing number in a fact.
Use a times fact you know to multiply by 20, 30, 40 and other tens, and wrap ten tens into a hundred.
Decide when to multiply, find a missing number in a times fact, compare products, and solve two-step problems.
