All 5 lessons in Modular Arithmetic

  1. 1. What Does "Mod" Mean? The Clock Arithmetic Idea

Students will understand modular arithmetic as a cyclic system and learn to reduce positive whole numbers to their simplest form in a given modulus.

  2. 2. Addition Under a Modulus

Students will learn to add two numbers within a given modulus by calculating the sum and finding the remainder, and will apply an efficiency shortcut for larger numbers.

  3. 3. Subtraction Under a Modulus and Simplifying Negative Numbers

Students will learn to subtract numbers under a modulus and convert negative results into their positive equivalents within the cycle.

  4. 4. Multiplication Under a Modulus

Students will learn to multiply two numbers under a given modulus by computing the product and reducing, and will apply an efficiency shortcut of reducing factors first.

  5. 5. Division Under a Modulus and Unit Consolidation

Students will learn to divide modulo $m$ using the systematic trial method, and will fluently apply all four operations to solve mixed modular arithmetic problems.
