GM13
3-D Shapes
Recognise and describe common solids — cubes, cuboids, prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and spheres — by counting faces, edges, and vertices and matching each solid to its net.
Builds on: GM12
Tell a 3-D solid from a flat shape, name the three parts (face, edge, vertex), and count the faces, edges and vertices of a solid including the hidden ones.
Describe a cuboid by its 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices; explain that a cube is a special cuboid with equal square faces; count parts and check with F + V - E = 2.
Recognise a prism (two identical ends) and a pyramid (a base rising to an apex), name each by its base, and count the faces, edges and vertices of a triangular prism and square- and triangular-based pyramids.
Recognise that some solids have a curved surface; describe a cylinder, cone and sphere by their flat faces, curved surface, edges and vertices; and sort solids into polyhedra and curved solids.
Explain a net as a flat shape that folds into a solid, match each solid (cube, cuboid, pyramid, prism, cylinder, cone) to its net, and decide whether six squares form a valid cube net.
