All 12 lessons in Multiplication & Division

Builds on: NP2

  1. 1. The Foundation: Times Tables and Vocabulary

Recall multiplication facts up to 12×12 fluently, use the terms factor, product, multiple, multiplier, and multiplicand accurately, identify factor pairs for numbers up to 144, and locate products on a multiplication grid.

  2. 2. The Power of Properties: Commutativity and Associativity

Apply the commutative and associative properties of multiplication to rearrange and regroup factors, simplify calculations using friendly number pairs, and show that different-looking multiplication facts are equivalent.

  3. 3. Column Multiplication: Putting It All Together

Multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit and 2-digit numbers using column multiplication, regroup (carry) correctly, and use placeholder zeros when multiplying by tens.

  4. 4. Extending to Decimals: Multiplying Decimals

Multiply decimals by integers and by decimals using the remove-and-adjust method, use column multiplication for larger calculations, and correctly position the decimal point in products.

  5. 5. Visualising Multiplication — Grids and Area Models

Use the grid method to multiply 2-digit numbers, connect it to the distributive property and column multiplication, draw area models, and apply the grid method to decimals.

  6. 6. Division — Concepts and Short Division

Understand division as sharing, grouping, and the inverse of multiplication; use dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder; perform short division with remainders and decimals.

  7. 7. Division — Representing and Inverses

Represent division in multiple ways (sharing, grouping, repeated subtraction), use function machines to model division as the inverse of multiplication, complete function machines with missing inputs/outputs/operations, and combine two operations into a single equivalent operation.

  8. 8. Clever Division — Decomposing and Dividing Decimals

Use decomposition to divide numbers mentally by breaking them into factors; divide decimals by integers using place value understanding and the "remove and adjust" method.

  9. 9. Factors and Common Factors

Find factor pairs of numbers, list factors in order, identify common factors, and find the highest common factor (HCF).

  10. 10. Multiplicative Reasoning

Identify multiplicative relationships, find the multiplier that connects two numbers, use function machines, and apply multiplicative reasoning to solve problems.

  11. 11. Word Problems — Multiplication and Division

Identify clue words for operations, solve one-step and two-step word problems, interpret remainders in context, and apply multiplication and division to money and measurement.

  12. 12. Applying to Geometry — Area and Volume

Calculate area of rectangles and rectilinear shapes, volume of cuboids, using multiplication. Apply correct units (cm², m², cm³, m³).
