Division Concepts
Understand division as equal sharing and grouping, and relate it to multiplication.
Builds on: PMF3
Put a total into equal groups to find how many groups. Count back by the group size, write the sentence with the divide sign, and check with times.
Share a total equally between groups to find how many in each. Deal round by round, write the sentence with the divide sign, and check with times.
See that one divide sentence can tell a sharing story or a grouping story. Learn the words dividend, divisor and quotient, and see why divide does not turn round.
Use the times tables backwards to divide. Divide by 5 by thinking how many 5s, divide by 2 by halving, and divide by 10 by counting tens.
Divide by 4 by halving twice and by 8 by halving three times. Check by doubling back.
Divide by 3 with the 3s times facts. Divide by 6 by dividing by 3 and then halving. Check by times 3, then double.
Divide by 9 using ten nines, and by 11 using repeated digits.
Divide by 7 and 12 by splitting the dividend into two pieces you know, dividing each, and adding.
Find the remainder when things do not divide exactly. The remainder is smaller than the divisor. Check with times and add. Decide what to do with the left over.
Divide tens by saying it in tens: 60 ÷ 3 is 6 tens ÷ 3 and 120 ÷ 30 is 12 tens ÷ 3 tens. Open a ten to share what will not share out.
Know that a number divides exactly when the remainder is 0, and use the last digit to test for 2, 5 and 10.
Use division to solve stories: decide sharing or grouping, times or divide, find a missing number, work in two steps and decide what to do with a left over.
