Operation Properties & Fact Families
Use the properties of operations and fact families to compute flexibly.
Adding goes in any order. Swap two numbers, add three numbers by making a ten or a hundred first, see that adding 0 changes nothing and that taking away does not swap.
Multiply three numbers in an order that is easy: look for 2 and 5 to make a ten, and see what 0 and 1 do inside a long product.
Three numbers make a fact family: two adding facts and two taking-away facts. Use the triangle to find missing numbers and to check an answer the other way round.
Three numbers make a times and divide fact family. Use the triangle to find missing numbers, see why a square gives only two facts, and learn that 0 divided by a number is 0 but you cannot divide by 0.
Cut a hard times fact into two easy facts and add the answers. A bracket says do this first, and the same answer comes from splitting. Choose a split that uses facts you know.
Look at the numbers first, then pick a tool: make a ten, spot a 0 or 1, split a hard fact, or use the triangle for a missing number. Check every answer the other way round.
